The Broship of the Rings

We’re a little late on this one, but when it was brought to our attention we had to share. Above is just one entry from Noelle Stevenson’s art series The Broship of the Rings. Above is Eowyn. Quoth Stevenson: “Of course the Rohirrim are a biker gang.” Welcome, ladies and gents, to a world where Shadowfax is a VW Van, Boromir pops his collar, Bill the Pony is a fixed-speed bike, and Arwen totally loved Aragorn before he was king.

Also Second Breakfast is now the greatest Tolkein based filk band name ever.

See all of Noelle’s Broship of the Rings drawings (and all her other stuff, including a lot of X-Men: First Class “peace” puns) here.

Something to think about re: that Bill and Ted sequel. (via Fashionably Geek.)

If you ever wondered what it’s like in the offices of The Mary Sue and Geekosystem, then keep wondering, because this pitch video that Geekosystem made (featuring our very own Jamie Frevele) is in no way accurate.

Except that is Max’s Risk set.

Emily Carroll has a new comic up, called The Prince and the Sea, and since her His Face All Red is still one of the best examples of making comics work on the internet that I’ve ever seen, I’m going to order you to go read it. (via Comics Beat.)

In other ladies making comics news (but not literally), we like Noelle Stevenson’s comment on Mulan.

We happened to mention offhandedly that Ms. Piggy was totally a pinup model back in the day to our sisterblog Styleite and they totally did a whole awesome post about it because we were so awesome.

At least that’s how we’re telling it.

A Totally Badass Black Widow, and Other New Posters from The Avengers

I gotta say, I haven’t been super enthusiastic about The Avengers photoshopped to death poster lineup, where it’s clear nobody was actually posing for the same photo and sometimes it looks like Captain America is ten stories tall. But the new round, where each poster focuses on one hero with another in the background (with a single exception), I can really dig. Scarlett Johansson looks like she is about to tear something apart, and that’s all I can really ask for.

Okay, here’s the rest of the team.

Cap,

Iron Man,

Thor,

Nick Fury (with Maria Hill),

And runners up at the contest to get their own poster, Hulk and Hawkeye.

While this seems like a slight to the two full-on members of the Avengers that they share a poster, we’re choosing to believe that some folks at Marvel PR saw Noelle Stevenson‘s adorable Hulkeye cartoons and decided to make it canon.

See more Hulkeye here and Stevenson’s tumblr.

This is a screen capture from Gingerhaze’s (Noelle Stevenson) tumblr of a screen capture she took from The Avenger’s actor Tom Hiddleston’s twitter. Someone gave him one of her Loki illustrations. Take note of what she typed under the photo. Yup, that about says it all. Actually, she later posted, “how am i supposed to do anything ever again.” THAT says it all.

The Hobbit Movies Get Name Changes, New Release Dates

$

Noelle Stevenson‘s reimagined elf king Thranduil as Legolas’ speciesist party dad is here to tell you that the three Hobbit movies now have updated names, updated release dates, and updated swagger, now that his character design has been revealed in the form of Lee Pace in a shiny tunic.

We were already pretty certain that the first installment of the story The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey would be December 14th. Sure, Peter Jackson and Co. managed to get permission to stretch the story across three films since San Diego Comic Con. But that decision was unlikely to impact a movie that’s already in the can. And, as expected, Unexpected Journey isn’t getting any changes. It’s the next two movies that will be shaking things up.

The second Hobbit film was to be subtitled There and Back Again, and set to premiere a year after the first, but that title has now been shunted to the third installment. The second movie is now, officially, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Bandersnatch Cumberbund Smaug, and will premiere December 13th, 2013. Folks who were worried about waiting a whole ‘nother year again for the conclusion of the story need not fear: There and Back Again is now set to hit theaters on July 18th, 2014, as a nice Hobbity breather between Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy.

And if you have my guess about it: I think this shortening of the release cycle betrays the presence of a cliffhanger between Smaug and There and Back. Hopefully, hopefully, the two movies will also be shorter and more manageable than the standard Peter Jackson fare. I love you and your movies, PJ, but I also wouldn’t mind being able to watch a LotR movie without feeling exhausted two thirds of the way through.

Oh. Speciesist Party Dad Thranduil wants me to tell you that The Desolation of Smaug is actually named after one of his dance moves. Whatever you say, Speciesist Party Dad Thranduil. Just stop embarrassing your kids.

Shakespearean Choose-Your-Own-Adventure Illustrated by Some of Our Favorite Ladies (And Others)

What, do you need some kind of explanation? Ryan North (who you might know from Dinosaur Comics) has just started up a Kickstarter for To Be or Not To Be, a choose-your-own-adventure version of Shakespeare’s Hamlet where you can play as Hamlet, Old Hamlet, or Ophelia. It’s already funded, with all profits from the sale of the published books going to charity.

But we thought you’d like to know about it anyway, so you can get in on those sweet rewards, because of the talent behind the book’s illustrations. You see, the more it gets funded, the more illustrations it will have, and the more art we’ll get to see by ladies like Carly Mondardo, Danielle Corsetto, Emily Partridge, Jess Fink, Kate Beaton, Meredith Gran, and Noelle Stevenson. Also come on, you can play as Ophelia.

At a photo op at Austin Comic Con this weekend, a lucky nerd proposed to his girl nerd, and a camera caught everything. We’re not sure who delights us more: Brent Spiner or Wil Wheaton. There’s a reason we love Noelle Stevenson (a.k.a. Gingerhaze) around here, and the reason is that she draws stuff like this. And her mad skills at depicting ’90s hair and fashion. And her San from Princess Mononoke. And her propensity for stripes. (Fine, fine, I can’t speak for Susana and Jill on that one—I just really like stripes and plaid.)

Allow Us To Explain

Allow Us To Explain

Comics are wonderful, visual ways of getting a story across, and it goes without saying that we at The Mary Sue love them. But as wonderful as they are, grabbing issue after issue can add up. And yet the desire for more comics persists. Luckily there are plenty of creative, engaging, funny, and complex stories and gag strips out there for those of us who need our dose of sequential art. You just have to know where to look.

Webcomics allow artists and writers to take advantage of almost unlimited possibilities and showcase truly innovative storytelling, plus they come from the minds and hands of people who simply love to create. Unfortunately the internet is a big place, and finding quality comics that fit your taste can be tricky when there are so many choices. That’s why we’ve decided to compile some of our own favorite webcomics, conveniently categorized and described, to help webcomic veterans and newbies alike find new comics to love.

Of course, this list could never be a comprehensive overview of every comic on the internet, or even every quality comic on the internet, but hopefully you come away with a new fandom to call your very own. Don’t see your favorite here? Tell everybody about it in the comments!

Talented Women Join Forces To Help Lady Characters Fight Yetis In Lumberjanes Comic

$

0

Yesterday I heard the name Lumberjanes. And I don’t think I’ll ever forget it.

Comics Alliance has the info and preview pages of Lumberjanes, a new series being written by Noelle Stevenson and Grace Ellis, with art by Brooke Allen for Boom Box! It was created by Ellis and Boom! Senior Editor Shannon Watters. Boom Box! is a relatively new imprint of Boom! Studios focusing on creator-owned titles, and Lumberjanes is set to be its second title.

Before we go any further, can I just say I was going to buy this comic book on the name alone? I love it.

Comics Alliance tells us Boom’s short sell: “Buffy the Vampire Slayer meets Gravity Falls” but here’s a longer description:

According to Boom!, Lumberjanes follows the adventures of five friends spending their summer at a scout camp. Unfortunately for Jo, April, Mal, Molly and Ripley, there are also a whole lot of “supernatural critters” out there trying to ruin their good time, and that’s when I assume the young-women-versus-monster combat starts up.

And yes, there are promises of yeti fights. Stevenson, creator of Nimona, is a favorite of The Mary Sue, so we were excited to see she and so many talented women were involved in the project. Although Comics Alliance doesn’t mention everyone, I started slowly seeing other women announcing, or at least hinting at, their involvement on twitter. Illustrator Aimee Fleck tweeted she’s done a cover for the upcoming series, Hannah Nance Partlow wrote she did the logo on the cover, and Kate Leth teased involvement on twitter but didn’t give any further details. However she did say, “It’s gonna be soooo queer.”

Stevenson wrote on tumblr the full-color series would be released in April. Pre-order it from your local comic shop like it’s your job.

Noelle Stevenson’s Comic Shop Experience Makes Us Sad

$

Noelle Stevenson, aka Gingerhaze, is an accomplished creator. She creates the weekly webcomic Nimona and her latest outing is the fabulously named Lumberjanes from Boom. But you see, that all amounts to nothing when entering certain comic book shops.

Do head over to Stevenson’s tumblr to read the rest of this rage-inducing comic strip (and a follow-up rant on this reblog) you just might relate to. Also read her great response to someone telling her they “don’t want to be rude or ignorant but…

If this worries you, don’t fret, there ARE good comic shops out there. A tumblr user told Stevenson, and in turn us, about a great resource - Hater Free Wednesdays. They list great, and not so great, comic shops around North America and you can submit others you know of.

What I want to know is, when will women stop getting this reaction in comic shops?
